2023 was the year to read 75 books.
2024 was the year to read 100 books.
Here are some things that I have found over the past two years of having a number based reading goal:
1 — My brain does not handle a number goal well. Once I set that goal, I want to read as many books as quickly as possible. I end up reading 10+ books a month and burn myself out by June. I experience the burnout from June-October, then pick back up again.
2 — I lean towards books that I know are going to be quick and easy reads. This ends up with me having read more 2- or 3-star books, instead of more 5-star books. The books I have been waiting to read get pushed to the bottom of the list due to having heavy world building.
3 — I am trying to reduce the stress in my life for 2025, and a number goal STRESSES me out. There is a considerable weight lifted off my shoulders when finishing a reading goal.
2025 will be the year to read whatever I want at whatever pace my life is calling for.
So this year, I am setting my Goodreads reading challenge to “1 book.” Then I am going to read the books that I have been putting off this year.
Some of these include:
- Sword of Kaigen
- The Mistborn series
- The Will of the Many
- The Rage of Dragons
- The Ballad of Falling Dragons
- A bunch of the classics
What are your reading goal(s) for the year?
